BIO
b. New York, 1991
Lenny Schnier is a trans and queer, Somerville-based mixed-media artist. At the core of their work lies an interest in the resonant overlap between the introspective nature of drawing and the trans experience. Contemporary drawing practices are celebrated for experimental gestures and departures from rigid traditional norms of picture making. Mark-makers employ that freedom of representation, harnessing drawing’s flexibility, expressive nature, sensitivity, and feeling. Such freedom is especially liberatory for trans and gender non-confirming individuals like Schnier. Their work is deeply personal and reflects an emotional and cerebral engagement with queerness, the body, and Schnier’s lived experiences as trans femme. Schnier employs methods of direct representation such as with drawing and photography and abstraction through painting and sculpture. They often blend these methods through collage and assemblage installation.
